Blue Smoke Quartz from the Santander province in Colombia, is a brand new mineral. Many of the crystals are incredibly transparent and gemmy, while others have twirling clouds of almost invisible micro-inclusions that produce a bluish opalescence when held up to the light, leading some of its users to baptize it Blue Smoke Quartz. This subtle color effect is produced by the same light scattering properties that make the sky blue. The silvery flakes on and in this quartz, although they resemble mica, are actually not mica but an uncommon lithium mineral – cookeite. The silver cookeite lamellae are often embedded in the faces of the quartz crystals, or scattered through the matrix, and even as inclusions inside the quartz, making this a true “lithium quartz”.
